The Nigerian Army has arrested 29 people for oil theft and recovered over 212,000 litres of stolen fuel. This is part of its ongoing fight against illegal oil activities in the Niger Delta.
How the Army Carried Out the Operations
Between March 3 and 9, 2025, soldiers raided several locations. As a result, they shut down 31 illegal oil sites and destroyed 26 boats used for smuggling. The raids took place in Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom states.
What Happened in Each State
In Rivers State, troops destroyed 10 illegal oil sites and seized a heavy-duty generator. In addition, they recovered 70,000 litres of stolen crude oil. Soldiers also caught three people transporting 10,000 litres of stolen fuel in a wooden boat.
In Delta State, troops stopped a truck carrying 35,000 litres of stolen fuel. Moreover, they seized five wooden boats used for smuggling and recovered another 4,000 litres of stolen fuel.
In Bayelsa State, soldiers clashed with suspected oil thieves before taking control of 12,000 litres of stolen crude oil. Furthermore, they found 9,000 litres of illegally refined diesel, seven wheelbarrows, and a motorcycle.
In Akwa Ibom, security forces intercepted smugglers trying to transport 5,600 litres of illegal petrol across the waterways.
Army’s Warning
Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, the commander of the 6 Division, praised the troops for their success. He also urged them to stay focused on stopping oil theft.
Additionally, he warned those involved in illegal oil deals to find legal jobs. Otherwise, they would face serious punishment.
