Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has withdrawn from Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s case. He made this decision on March 25, 2025, after a petition from Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The case will now be reassigned to another judge.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had challenged her six-month suspension from the Senate. On March 4, Justice Egwuatu had stopped the Senate Committee on Ethics from taking action against her. He also asked the Senate to explain why they should not halt further action.
On March 20, Senate President Akpabio moved to challenge the ruling. He filed an appeal in Abuja, asking the court to stop the case and allow him to contest the judge’s decision of March 10.
This case highlights tensions in the Nigerian Senate. It also raises concerns about fairness and due process in legislative matters.
