Amnesty International has voiced strong support for a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Lagos who reportedly faced intimidation. The controversy arose after the corps member posted a critical video about President Bola Tinubu on TikTok.
The international human rights organization condemned the alleged threats against the young woman. It stressed that freedom of expression is a fundamental right that must be protected. Amnesty International urged Nigerian authorities to ensure that citizens can voice their opinions without fear of harassment or punishment.
The video, which went viral on social media, sparked mixed reactions from the public. Some users expressed solidarity with the corps member, while others criticized her boldness. In response, Amnesty International stated that no one should be threatened or bullied for exercising their right to free speech.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also reacted to the situation. He condemned the reported intimidation and called on authorities to respect freedom of expression. Other public figures and activists joined the conversation, highlighting the importance of upholding democratic values.
Amnesty International further emphasized that Nigeria, as a democratic nation, should not tolerate any form of suppression against citizens expressing dissenting views. The group called on the government to adhere to both national and international human rights standards, ensuring that freedom of speech remains protected.
