Massive protests have broken out across the United States, as millions of citizens rally against President Donald Trump’s policies. The demonstrations reflect growing public outrage over economic decisions, immigration rules, and education funding cuts.
“Hands Off!” Movement Sparks Nationwide Action
On April 5, 2025, the “Hands Off!” campaign organized more than 1,400 coordinated protests. People gathered in all 50 states, while cities like Berlin, Paris, and Ottawa hosted solidarity events. Reports estimate that 3 to 5 million people participated, making it one of the largest political demonstrations in recent memory.
More than 150 organizations, including the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and the AFL-CIO, backed the movement. Protesters targeted a broad list of grievances, such as increased tariffs, reduced federal assistance programs, and aggressive immigration enforcement.
50501 Movement Plans Second Wave of Protests
Now, organizers are preparing for the next phase. On April 19, the 50501 Movement plans over 400 events across the country. The name symbolizes 50 protests in 50 states—one united voice.
These events go beyond traditional protests. Some communities will host voter registration drives, climate clean-up initiatives, and public awareness campaigns. For instance, in Pittsburgh, a coalition of environmental groups will hold an Earth Day rally in Schenley Plaza, supported by Stand Up for Science.
University Students Push Back Against Federal Cuts
College campuses are also joining the resistance. At institutions like Harvard and Columbia University, students and faculty are holding protests to oppose federal budget cuts and restrictions on foreign scholars.
The U.S. government has frozen $2.2 billion in funding for Harvard alone. In addition, new rules threaten the future of international student enrollment. University leaders warn that these policies could weaken academic freedom and reduce research opportunities.
Court Blocks Unlawful Deportation by Federal Agents
In a related development, a federal appeals court recently ruled against the Trump administration in an immigration case. The court found that officials wrongfully deported Maryland resident Kilmar Ábrego García to El Salvador. It ordered the government to facilitate his return.
Although the court issued a clear directive, the administration has resisted complying. Officials claim, without solid evidence, that García has gang affiliations—a claim the court dismissed.
