Nigeria’s NAFDAC Cracks Down on Fake Drugs
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized over ₦1 trillion worth of expired and fake drugs. As a result, the agency shut down more than 11,000 illegal drug shops and arrested 40 suspects involved in selling counterfeit medications.
According to NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, many of these drugs were kept in toilets and poorly ventilated warehouses. Even worse, some dealers changed expiration dates on expired drugs to resell them.
Furthermore, authorities confiscated highly potent opioids like Tramadol 225mg and banned substances such as Tapfradol. In Aba, Abia State, NAFDAC also found 140 tonnes of expired drugs ready for distribution.
To prevent future crimes, NAFDAC is pushing for stricter penalties, including life imprisonment or the death penalty for offenders. Therefore, the agency has urged lawmakers to amend drug laws and impose harsher punishments.
Overall, this operation proves NAFDAC’s commitment to protecting public health. By removing fake drugs from circulation, the agency hopes to create a safer pharmaceutical market in Nigeria.
