Today, March 21, 2025, Namibia celebrates a historic moment by inaugurating its first female president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. The ceremony takes place in Windhoek and coincides with the country’s 35th Independence Day.


A Victory for Women and Progress

Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah won the November 2024 elections with about 57% of the vote. She becomes the first woman to lead Namibia and joins Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan as one of the few female heads of state in Africa.

At 72 years old, Nandi-Ndaitwah is a seasoned politician. She served as Vice President and held a key position within the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO). This party has governed Namibia since the nation gained independence in 1990.


Celebrating the Inauguration

Dignitaries from across the continent gathered in Windhoek to witness this historic event. Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan and former South African President Thabo Mbeki were among the distinguished guests. The atmosphere was vibrant as citizens and leaders alike welcomed the change.
