Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered a setback as Zimbabwe snatched a late equalizer, forcing a 1-1 draw on Tuesday. The match, played at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Akwa Ibom, saw the Super Eagles struggle to secure a crucial win.
Coming off a 2-0 victory against Rwanda on Friday, Nigeria was eager to build momentum. Right from the start, the Super Eagles dominated possession and created several scoring chances. However, Zimbabwe’s defense remained solid, frustrating Nigeria’s attacking efforts.
As the game progressed, Nigeria intensified their push for a breakthrough. Finally, in the 74th minute, their persistence paid off. Victor Osimhen connected with a low cross from Moses Simon, skillfully heading the ball into the far post to give Nigeria a 1-0 lead.
However, just when it seemed Nigeria would secure all three points, Zimbabwe responded. In the 90th minute, a defensive lapse allowed Tawanda Chirewa to capitalize on a quick attack. He fired a shot past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali at the near post, leveling the score.
Despite a few late chances, Nigeria failed to regain the lead. Wilfred Ndidi had an opportunity to seal the win, but his shot went off target. As a result, the Super Eagles were forced to settle for a frustrating draw.
With this outcome, Nigeria faces even more pressure in their World Cup qualification campaign. Moving forward, they must improve their defensive stability and finishing to keep their hopes alive.
