Keir Starmer
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reaffirmed support for Ukraine after a heated meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Trump and Zelenskyy started with polite greetings. However, the meeting soon turned tense. Trump accused Zelenskyy of not being grateful for U.S. aid and warned that rejecting peace talks with Russia could spark a bigger war.
As a result, Trump canceled a planned minerals deal. This agreement would have given the U.S. access to Ukraine’s rare-earth resources while helping Ukraine financially.
After the dispute, Starmer spoke with both leaders. He stressed the UK’s commitment to Ukraine and insisted that Kyiv must be involved in peace talks. He also defended Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial rights.
To strengthen support, Starmer is hosting a London summit. European leaders, including Emmanuel Macron and Ursula von der Leyen, have backed Ukraine. They aim to unite against Russian aggression and secure more aid.
Despite tensions, Starmer’s trip to Washington had wins. He secured a UK-U.S. trade deal and progress on the Chagos Islands dispute. However, Trump did not promise security for British peacekeepers in Ukraine.
Since U.S. aid is now uncertain, Ukraine may struggle to defend itself. The UK and Europe must now step up to help Ukraine resist Russia.
