UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called for US security guarantees for Ukraine to prevent another Russian invasion, as he prepares to meet Donald Trump at the White House.

Trump insists Europe must handle Ukraine’s security and states the US will not offer guarantees. He confirmed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will visit the Oval Office Friday to sign a preliminary minerals deal, with Zelensky seeking more security assurances.

Finland’s Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen supports Starmer’s visit, saying Europe must continue helping Ukraine while seeking a lasting peace deal. She warns that Russia remains a long-term threat.

Lord Simon McDonald, a former UK diplomat, suggests that Trump is unlikely to find the UK’s 3% GDP defence spending pledge sufficient. He notes that Starmer’s connection to the British Royal Family could prove advantageous in negotiations, given Trump’s well-documented admiration for the royals.

Starmer and Trump will meet later today, with Ukraine as the key topic of discussion.
