Why People Are Talking About Sumaila
In Kano, members of the NNPP (New Nigeria People’s Party) are upset because one of their senators, Kawu Sumaila, invited top APC (All Progressives Congress) leaders to his events. However, he ignored important figures in his own party.
Mr. Sumaila represents Kano South in the Senate. He used to be in the APC but left before the 2023 elections due to disagreements. Now, many people are wondering if he plans to return to the APC.
Who Attended His Events?
On February 21, Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, attended the wedding of Mr. Sumaila’s children. Additionally, another high-profile guest was Abdullahi Ganduje, the APC’s National Chairman and former governor of Kano. Mr. Jibrin even posted about the event online, specifically mentioning Ganduje’s presence.
The next day, both Ganduje and Jibrin were seen at the first graduation ceremony of Al-Istiqama University. This is a private institution linked to Mr. Sumaila, which further fueled speculation about his political stance.
NNPP Members Are Not Happy
Many NNPP members feel betrayed. They question why Mr. Sumaila ignored Kano’s governor, Abba Yusuf, and their party leader, Rabiu Kwankwaso. Instead, he welcomed opposition figures like former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau of the PDP (Peoples Democratic Party). As a result, tension within the party continues to grow.
Is Sumaila Leaving NNPP?
There are growing rumors that Mr. Sumaila may soon leave the NNPP and return to the APC. Furthermore, when reporters tried to contact him for a response, his phone was unreachable, adding to the uncertainty.
Disagreements Over Kano’s Traditional Leaders
Mr. Sumaila and some NNPP lawmakers from Kano South have clashed with Governor Yusuf over a major decision. The governor removed four new emirates in Kano and reinstated former Emir Lamido Sanusi. Consequently, Sumaila and his allies opposed this move, arguing that it did not benefit their people.
Since then, they have distanced themselves from the NNPP-led state government. This has only increased suspicions that they may leave the party.
What Happens Next?
If Mr. Sumaila officially joins the APC, he will be one of many opposition lawmakers who have switched parties. Moreover, the NNPP is Nigeria’s fourth-largest party and currently governs only Kano State. Its leader, Kwankwaso, ran for president in the last election but finished fourth, winning only in Kano.
The political landscape in Kano remains uncertain. However, as events unfold, it will become clearer whether Sumaila is making a permanent shift or simply maintaining strategic relationships.
