Kalu Calls for Full Recognition of MKO Abiola as Former President
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has urged former military leader Ibrahim Babangida to reveal the truth about the annulled June 12, 1993, election. He believes Nigerians deserve to know who stopped the official declaration of MKO Abiola as the winner. According to him, full transparency is necessary for justice.
Furthermore, Kalu called on President Bola Tinubu to officially recognize Abiola as a former president. While he praised former President Buhari for posthumously honoring Abiola, he stressed that more should be done. Recognizing Abiola’s presidency, he argued, would bring healing to both his family and the nation.
Discussing historical matters, Kalu rejected claims that the 1966 coup was an ethnic conspiracy. Instead, he described it as a national military action involving officers from different backgrounds.
On governance, he defended Tinubu’s economic policies. Although he acknowledged the current hardships, he urged Nigerians to remain patient. In his view, rebuilding the economy requires time and careful planning. Additionally, he emphasized the need for agricultural investment over direct cash handouts. Supporting food production, he explained, would ensure long-term economic stability.
Looking ahead, Kalu expressed confidence in his party’s victory in 2027. He dismissed any speculation about a new candidate, insisting that Tinubu would secure re-election.
His remarks reflect his firm stance on Nigeria’s democracy, history, and economic future.
