Mojisola Meranda has resigned as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly after 49 days in office. She announced her decision during a plenary session on Monday. She said she stepped down as a personal sacrifice to protect the Assembly.
Reports say top APC leaders in Lagos pressured her to leave. Meranda took over as Speaker in January 2025 after lawmakers removed Mudashiru Obasa. Her appointment made history because she became the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly.
Earlier, people speculated about her resignation. Obasa claimed she agreed to step down at a peace meeting, but Meranda denied this. On February 19, 2025, her Chief Press Secretary, Segun Ajiboye, also rejected the rumors.
The Lagos Assembly has faced leadership struggles in recent months. Obasa opposed his removal, saying lawmakers did not follow due process. Now, since Meranda has stepped down, the House must choose a new Speaker.
Lawmakers have not yet announced her replacement. More updates will follow soon.
