Pep Guardiola criticized the Mitre Ultimax Pro ball used in the FA Cup. After Manchester City’s 3-1 win over Plymouth Argyle, he said the ball was hard to control and not up to standard compared to those in the Premier League and Champions League. He also noted that several players, including Erling Haaland, struggled with their shots. Many attempts went over the crossbar, not only in City’s match but in other FA Cup games as well.
The Football Association (FA) quickly responded, defending the ball’s quality. A spokesperson explained that the ball meets FIFA Quality Pro standards and performs as expected. They also pointed out that players have already scored over 350 goals in the tournament, proving its reliability.
This is not the first time a manager has complained about match balls. Earlier this season, Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta voiced concerns about the Puma ball in the Carabao Cup, saying it affected player performance. Despite these complaints, the FA remains confident in its deal with Mitre, which will continue until 2027.
Although Guardiola expressed frustration, Manchester City secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. They now prepare for a crucial game against Bournemouth, hoping to keep their title dreams alive. With more key matches ahead, fans can expect more debates and exciting moments in the competition.
