Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has officially left the All Progressives Congress (APC). On Monday, he announced his decision to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) through a post on his verified Facebook page.

According to El-Rufai, he resigned from the APC after consulting his mentors, colleagues, and supporters. He admitted that the move was difficult. However, he said it was necessary due to recent issues within the party.

As one of the APC’s founders, El-Rufai reflected on the effort it took to form the party in 2013. He recalled working with other patriots to merge political groups and establish the APC. Initially, he hoped to stay aligned with the party’s values until his retirement.

Nevertheless, he expressed disappointment with the current leadership. In his opinion, they neglected critical issues and weakened democratic practices. For the past two years, he observed a lack of effort to resolve internal problems.

Furthermore, El-Rufai emphasized his significant role in the APC’s victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023. Yet, he said he could no longer remain in a party that ignored its members and weakened its structure.

Looking forward, he plans to work with other opposition leaders to build a coalition. His goal is to form a strong front against the APC in the 2027 general elections.

He also called on Nigerians who want positive change to join the SDP. More importantly, he urged them to support the party’s vision of a better and more united Nigeria.
