The Ijaw National Congress (INC) has warned that impeaching Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara could have severe economic consequences for Nigeria.

This warning came after security operatives blocked the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex. As a result, Governor Fubara could not present the 2025 budget, even though the Supreme Court had ordered it.

The INC also criticized the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. They accused him of trying to create conflict between the Ikwerre and Ijaw ethnic groups with his divisive remarks and political actions.

INC Accuses Lawmakers of Serving Wike’s Agenda

On Wednesday, INC President Professor Benjamin Okaba condemned the lawmakers’ actions. He claimed they were more focused on promoting Wike’s interests than maintaining peace in Rivers State.

Okaba stated that their behavior was not surprising. He said Wike had financed their elections and even admitted to handpicking them. According to Okaba, this explains why their loyalty lies with Wike rather than the people.

He also criticized the blockade of the Assembly Complex. He argued that Fubara’s decision to follow the Supreme Court’s ruling showed respect for the law, not weakness.

“Governor Fubara is following the rule of law. He promised the President he would enforce the Supreme Court’s decision. So why are lawmakers stopping him from entering the Assembly?” Okaba questioned.

He also pointed out the inconsistency in their actions. They gave the governor deadlines to present the budget while demanding the dismissal of 19 commissioners, including the Commissioner for Finance. Okaba asked who would prepare the budget if the finance commissioner were removed.

Warning Against Reckless Impeachment

Okaba warned against any reckless attempt to impeach Fubara. He said such actions would face strong resistance.

“We will not watch them remove the governor without cause. If they do, the consequences will be severe. This is not just a threat; it’s the reality,” he said.

Unity Between Ikwerre and Ijaw Remains Strong

Okaba also dismissed Wike’s recent comments as an attempt to divide the Ikwerre and Ijaw communities. He insisted that Wike’s words would not succeed in causing conflict.

“The Ikwerre people have already apologized for Wike’s behavior toward Fubara. If the President of Ogbakor Ikwerre had spoken, I would respond differently. But since it is Wike, I won’t waste my time. Ikwerre and Ijaw are not enemies—Wike is only fighting his own battles,” Okaba said.

The INC’s stance shows the growing tension in Rivers State and the urgent need for dialogue to resolve the crisis peacefully.
