
A recent attack by suspected armed herders in Benue State has claimed the lives of 20 individuals. The attack, which took place on Thursday and Friday, targeted communities in the Ukum and Logo Local Government Areas (LGAs), leaving a devastating trail of destruction.
Attack Details
The herders invaded the communities, killing several people, including an entire family of eight. Many others suffered severe injuries, and some remain missing. The Benue State Police Command reported recovering 17 bodies from the two LGAs by Friday afternoon. Rescue efforts continue as security forces search the surrounding bushes for survivors.
Governor Alia’s Statement
Governor Hyacinth Alia confirmed the increasing death toll, speaking directly to the people of Benue. “It is with great sorrow that I address you regarding the recent coordinated attacks by suspected herders in our beloved Ukum and Logo communities,” he said.
He explained that security forces found five bodies in Gbagir initially. Later, two more bodies were discovered by local residents searching for missing loved ones. The Governor shared that a grieving family in Gbagir chose to immediately bury their relative, and security personnel ensured their safety during the process.
Rising Death Toll
The police later recovered 12 additional bodies in Logo, bringing the confirmed death toll to 20. Governor Alia emphasized the personal impact of this tragedy, stating, “These are not just numbers; these are fathers, mothers, children, and siblings whose lives ended in senseless violence.”
Commitment to Safety and Peace
Governor Alia reassured the public that the state would not back down in the face of such violence. “We remain committed to protecting every Benue life and will continue our efforts to restore peace and order to the region,” he assured the citizens.
He urged local residents to assist authorities by providing information that could help identify the attackers. “By working together, we can bring these criminals to justice,” he said.
The Road Ahead
Despite the heartbreaking loss, Governor Alia urged the people of Benue to stay united and strong. “Benue will not bow to fear,” he declared. “We will rise, rebuild, and remain unshaken.”
